Album by Jesca Hoop
Fresh off her duets album Love Letter for Fire, recorded with Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam, Jesca Hoop has released Memories For Now. Grammy nominated musician and producer Blake Mills produced Hoop’s album, having played guitar for Hoop’s recordings in the past and performing live with her from time to time. Memories For Now reminisces tales from Hoop’s own life with an energetic, folk-centered delivery. Having been raised Mormon, Hoop explores the different sides of religion in “Songs of Old,” and she discusses abandonment in “The Lost Sky,” inspired by a close friend who woke from a coma to find himself divorced. As an artist with a truly remarkable past—she was Tom Waits nanny when she began her musical career—and whose accelerating career has spanned the last decade, it’s safe to say Jesca Hoop will be delivering her sweet, sagacious for a while. I Am Not Your Negro brings to life James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript Remember This House. A renowned, mid-century American author, poet, playwright ... More
Film by Raoul Peck
I Am Not Your Negro brings to life James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript Remember This House. A renowned, mid-century American author, poet, playwright and social critic, Baldwin published several classics in his lifetime such as Go tell It on the Mountain (1953), Giovanni’s Room (1956) and Another Country (1962). Armed with his unique insight as a gay, black man, Baldwin’s fiction addressed personal obstacles, psychological pressures and social norms surrounding black, gay and bisexual persons in America and their internal and external struggles for acceptance. Baldwin died, however, before completing Remember This House, an in-depth reflection on the history of race relations in America and civil rights leaders such as Medgar Evers, Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr. His manuscript lives on in Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck’s documentary I Am Not Your Negro, featuring Samuel L Jackson as narrator and video clips of Baldwin himself speaking. The film won the People’s Choice Award at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and has been named the second highest-ranking movie of 2016 by Metacritic. (Magnolia Pictures)

Film by Matthew Newton
Winner of the 2016 SXSW Audience Award, From Nowhere tells the story of three undocumented teenagers just about to graduate high school in the Bronx. With the help of one of their teachers (Julianne Nicholson) and an immigration lawyer (Denis O’Hare), the students avoid being discovered by authorities, all while navigating the everyday problems of adolescence. Nicholson and O’Hare deliver exceptional supporting performances, as do newcomers Octavia-Chavez Richmond, Raquel Castro, and J. Mallory McCree. Directed by Matthew Newton (Three Blind Mice), From Nowhere illustrates the complexities of being an immigrant in America, where there is no downright resolution, and sheds light on spontaneous acts of humanity. Album by Julie Byrne
Singer-songwriter Julie Byrne was born and raised in Buffalo, New York but has called Pittsburgh, Chicago, Seattle, New Orleans, Northampton and New York City “home” in recent years. Her constant wandering is evidenced in her newest album, Not Even Happiness. In “Melting Grid”, we travel the magic of the Pacific Northwest, and we see the morning sky in Boulder in “Natural Blue.” Close your eyes and you are sitting in a cabin or stopping to stretch your legs on a long road trip. The joy of nature and travel inspired her album title: “I walked alongside the Atlantic as the Earth came alive from the sun. There was a palpable sense of emergence to everything. I felt it in myself too… I would trade that feeling for nothing… not even happiness.” (Bada Bing Records)

Album by Lula Pena
Portuguese singer Lula Pena’s first album, Phados, was released in 1998 earning the world singer a global and devoted fan base. Since then, and despite the gap in album releases and rare appearances, she has met with great success from the release of her second album Troubadour in 2010. To the delight of her longsuffering fans, Pena’s third album, Archivo Pittoresco, is finally here. Pena’s voice is hauntingly deep with a mellow vibrato, and she easily flows between six languages: Portuguese, French, Spanish, Greek, Italian and English. While the undertone of phados (her own spelling of the Portuguese music genre) is present throughout Archivo Pittoresco, the music weaves a variety of world styles, including flamenco, folk blues and Bossa nova. Pena pays homage to her favorite poets and composers, such as Manos Hadjidakis and Violeta Parra, weaving their lyrics and poems into her own music. (Crammed Discs)
